May

We can use 'may' to ask politely for permission to do something. However this is rather formal and not used very often in modern spoken English. In formal English, ‘may’ is used to express a wish or hope. ในภาษาอังกฤษอย่างเป็นทางการ ‘may’ ถูกใช้เพื่อที่จะแสดงความปรารถนาหรือความหวัง

· We pray for those who died - may they rest in peace.

· It is a fine tradition and long may it continue!

In formal English, ‘may’ is used after 'so that' or 'in order that' to say that someone does something in order to make something else possible. ในภาษาอังกฤษอย่างเป็นทางการ ‘may’ ถูกใช้วางไว้หลัง so that หรือ in order that เพื่อที่จะพูดว่าผู้ใดทำสิ่งใดเพื่อทำให้สิ่งอื่นเป็นไปได้

Jack may get upset if you don't tell him the truth. (Positive forms in the future รูปบอกเล่าในอนาคตกาล) Jack may not get upset, even if you tell him the truth. (Negative forms in the future รูปปฏิเสธในอนาคตกาล)

You can also use ‘might’ to express possibility. คุณสามารถใช้ ‘might’ เพื่อที่จะแสดงความเป็นไปได้ได้ด้วย

May: Give permission ให้อนุญาติ

You may leave the table now that you're finished with your dinner. (Positive forms in the present รูปบอกเล่าในปัจจุบันกาล) You may not leave the table. You're not finished with your dinner yet. (Negative forms in the present รูปปฏิเสธในปัจจุบันกาล)

You were allowed to leave the table after you finished your dinner. (Positive forms in the past รูปบอกเล่าในอดีตกาล) You were not allowed to leave the table because you hadn't finished your dinner. (Negative forms in the past รูปปฏิเสธในอดีตกาล)

You may leave the table when you finish your dinner. (Positive forms in the future รูปบอกเล่าในอนาคตกาล) You may not leave the table until you are finished with your dinner. (Negative forms in the future รูปปฏิเสธในอนาคตกาล)

You can also use ‘can’ to give permission. คุณสามารถใช้ ‘can’ เพื่อที่จะให้อนุญาติได้ด้วย

May: Request permission ขออนุญาติ

May I borrow your eraser?

May I make a phone call?
